     Antique vehicles

This is where metal and machine first inspired passion and loyalty… where admirers became collectors and collecting became a lifestyle. These are the antique and classic stock vehicles built from the turn of the century through 1972. Whatever they’re called, they are a perfect fit for Hagerty.

Classic vehicles

It used to be said that any vehicle 20-25 years old or older was considered collectible. Today this is not the case. Automakers' production numbers significantly increased in the mid-1970's and quality standards fell. Because of this, there are some mid-1970's and 80's vehicles that are not collectible. However, many are because of their desirable characteristics such as:

  • Convertibles
  • 2-door sports cars (few 4-door sedans are collectible)
  • Unique body shapes
  • Foreign sports cars
  • Big block V8 engines

Newer Vehicles: limited production, exotic & special interest

  • Low production numbers, sports cars, and special edition vehicles are characteristics of 1990 and newer vehicles we consider a fit for our program.

The following guidelines apply for newer vehicles:

    • Vehicle must be in excellent condition
    • Minimum value
        • 1990’s vehicles - $10,000
        • 2000 and newer - $15,000
    • Your regular-use vehicle must be
        • No more than ten years old when insuring a 1990’s vehicle
        • No more than five years old when insuring a 2000 and newer vehicle

  • Motorsports: pro-street & any raced vehicles with Hagerty

Hagerty’s program provides off-track coverage for many raced and/or pro-street vehicles. Vehicles that are actively raced may qualify for a Hagerty policy; however, coverage does not apply while the vehicle is on-track. Storage and transport coverage for these vehicles is also important for individuals to consider.

Purpose-built vintage racecars can be very valuable and collectible due to their history. Modern, high quality, excellent condition vehicles may also be considered. Pro-street vehicles include those vehicles with roll cages and tubbed rear wheel wells to accommodate wide racing-type tires; other modifications are generally present.

Raced vehicles and pro-street vehicles are carefully reviewed. Coverage may be limited or not available for all risks.

                 Vehicles under active restoration

Because the process of restoring a collector vehicle is a significant part of the hobby, we are happy to offer coverage for vehicles that are being “actively” restored. An applicant must demonstrate that the vehicle is being actively restored. Good photographs and restoration details will help verify an active restoration.

Modified vehicles: street rods, replicas, lowriders & tuners

The degree to which a vehicle has been modified determines both its acceptability for our program and the rate at which it will be quoted. We consider a vehicle to be modified when the performance has been significantly increased, the body/chassis/frame has been structurally altered or a custom paint job is valued above $10,000.

                  Replicas

A replica car is a reproduction of an automaker’s manufactured vehicle. They can either be professionally assembled or home-built and because of this we take a closer look at the quality of each vehicle. Hagerty does not offer insurance on inexpensive, home-built kit cars. Replica cars should duplicate vehicles that are no longer in production. Some examples are the 1950’s Porsche Speedster and 1920’s Mercedes Benz Roadster.

                 Lowriders

Lowriders are vehicles that have typically been modified with hydraulic or air bag suspension systems which enable them to be lowered within a fraction of an inch off the ground or possibly "bounced" so that the front end of the car comes completely off the ground. They are also typically customized to include elaborate "gold flake" paint jobs, intricate air brushed murals, wire wheels, custom rims, plush interiors, and expensive stereo systems. Usage of these vehicles will be examined carefully when determining program eligibility.

      Tuners

Tuners are generally Japanese, Asian or European manufactured vehicles that are highly customized for looks and/or performance. These vehicles are usually 1990 and newer. Typical modifications include tuned engines, body kits, carbon fiber, custom paint, wheel and interiors featuring elaborate stereo equipment, TVs, video game systems, etc. These vehicles are underwritten carefully because they are generally fast and are susceptible to theft or vandalism. Some examples are the Honda Civic, Mazda RX-7, Mitsubishi Lancer (Evo), Scion and Subaru Impreza (WRX).

                 Trucks & other utility vehicles

These are the workhorses who defined the tasks of their generation, the tough here-to-there transportation preserved by a growing number of collecting enthusiasts. Trucks and other utility vehicles are gaining in popularity as collectible vehicles, especially older models up to the mid-1960's. To qualify, these vehicles should no longer be used for utility-type purposes, such as hauling, towing or camping.

      Motorcycles and scooters

They’re the iconic symbols of individuality, a statement of their times as much as a form of transportation. Today, a growing number of collectors are preserving classic motorcycles and scooters for future generations.

Hagerty recognizes that these vehicles are becoming increasingly more valuable and collectible. For our program, the market value of a collectible bike must be increasing and meet our minimum value limit. In general, Hagerty offers insurance on bikes from the late 1960s and older. However, depending on the model, we will consider bikes produced as late as 1981.

Know when to buy, sell or hold.

Is it important to you that you use your collector car as a daily driver?

Safeco will cover you, if you do.

              Agreed Value

Regular cars lose their value over time from the adverse effects of wear and tear. Classic, collectible and vintage cars are a different story. Many increase in value over time. With agreed value classic car insurance, if your car is declared a total loss after being stolen or damaged, you will receive the amount we agreed upon when you took out your policy. All you pay is the deductible.

Go Ahead and Drive up to 10,000 miles per year

Safeco allows you to drive your classic car on more than just weekends and holidays. Go ahead and drive up to 10,000 miles per year with our regular use option. Or choose our limited use option if you drive your classic less than 5000 miles per year. You can even mix your daily use cars with your collector cars on the same policy and still get all of the Safeco classic car insurance coverage. You can also split them up as individual policies. It's your choice.

      The More the Merrier

We’ll insure your entire classic car collection, whether you’re a collector of just one or three or even 100.

      Standard Coverage Options

Safeco classic car insurance offers all the same basic coverage options as regular auto insurance, including:
